OH MONDAY!
1. While looking back at photos, I found this one of Miles' nursery that didn't get shared. I think it shows his crib nook perfectly!
2. We spent the weekend at Whistler and loved it. Whistler is such an easy getaway from Vancouver and once you are there, so much is walkable and bike-able that you can really switch off and explore with the kids. We did our first family trail ride with the girls on their new big bikes and rode to Lost Lake for a picnic. Such a proud Mama moment!
3. The drive home from Whistler was made easy by putting The Magic Tree House audio book on for the kids. It's definitely not as great as jamming to your own favourite tunes in the car, but it certainly is better than listening to whiny kids in the back ;)
4. I am excited to have three brand new rooms to start designing. One is another basement playroom project and I can't wait to get started (and of course show you the transformation when it's all done)!
5. I recently discovered local Vancouver artist Sara Clark and I love her work. How gorgeous would this knotted wall hanging look in a kids' room?!
Happy Monday!
8 SUMMER KIDS BOOKS THAT INSPIRE A LOVE OF NATURE
It's been too long since I've shared a post about kids books, but my feeling about the importance for early childhood literacy has certainly not dwindled. Summer is THE perfect time to get reading with kids and reading outdoors is one of our much-loved lazy summer day activities! So grab a blanket, a kid or two and head outside with some new books that are sure to become summer favourites.
Today's book selections are perfect for reading outside with the kids; they will even inspire a love of nature and teach you a thing or two as well!
01. // The Honeybee; 02. // Curious Kids Nature Guide; 03. // Seed School; 04. // Plants Feed Me; 05. // Up in the Garden Down in the Dirt; 06. // How Do Flowers Grow; 07. // Tap the Magic Tree; 08. // The Butterfly Dance.

10 OF THE CUTEST SWIMSUITS FOR GIRLS
Summer break is here!!! So now is the perfect time to share my favourite sources for the cutest girls swimsuits around (lots of boys ones on these sites too!). I've mixed in super inexpensive swimwear with more extravagant; small brands with some from big box stores. We like to keep a pair for the pool or ocean (these typically wear out most quickly), some for the lake (our special ones) and a two piece which is perfect for days when a rash guard is mandatory (making bathroom breaks that much easier).
Whatever the occasion, I hope you find at least one pair that will be perfect for your little one this summer. Have a great weekend!
01. // Navy ruffle swimsuit; 02. // Pink full coverage; 03. // Floral two piece; 04. // Powder blue stripes; 05. // Green ruffle waves; 06. // Floral high back; 07. // Pink stripe seersucker; 08. // Blue liberty print; 09. // Mint simple ruffle; 10. // Tone on tone two piece.
INSPIRATION: KIDS NOOKS + CRANNIES
It doesn’t take long for a mama to realize that kids—and mainly, all their stuff—take up WAY more space than you might expect. Between toys and books, highchairs and art supplies, finding calm in the logistical chaos is no easy feat.
But rather than contain a child’s space to a single room, I’m always so inspired by families who embrace creative solutions with playful nooks and crannies throughout their home. Think cozy built-in benches, innovative toy storage, closets-turned nursery spaces, and more. Not only are these clever crannies fun for kids, but they help maximize every square inch of your home.
So whether you’re a city family tight on space or just looking to infuse some whimsy in your current layout, design a few unexpected hideaways for the kiddos and you’ll have the coolest house on the block—guaranteed.
Built-in Bed
Work around slanted ceilings with an adorable bed build right into the wall. Space dilemmas, solved!
Sneaky Toy Storage
Your home’s nooks and crannies make the perfect hiding spot for toys. I love how this space cleverly disguises storage underneath a window bench.
Nursery Hideaway
This master bedroom doubles as a nursery by converting the closet to a darling nook for baby. Add some wallpaper, shelving, a mini crib, and voila!
Book Reading Bench
Imagine how much fun your little ones would have crawling into a bench just their size. Toss in a few comfy pillows and you’ve got the ultimate reading spot for their imaginations to run wild.
Kid-Sized Seating
Don’t let dead space go to waste! Include a playful seating nook in your child’s bedroom where they can lounge, read, or dream up their next big idea.
Any specific nooks or crannies pique your interest? I’d love to hear what clever hideaways you have tucked inside your home!
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO READ?
It's Wednesday, the forecast is sunshine here in Vancouver and I'm sure you're all anxiously awaiting the weekend. For our friends in the US, summer break has already started and for us here, there is only another week to go!!! Over the summer, this blog changes a bit to focus more on lifestyle content and less on client projects.
With this in mind...I'd love to know what you'd like to read and see!!! I'm asking for your help in giving your input. Do you come here just for pretty pictures of kids' spaces and inspiration for your own kids' rooms? Or do you come for ideas about products, children's style, book ideas and general fun stuff to make and do with your kids? What would you like to see more of? Less of?
Do you like to read the blog and come back for reference or is a quick break (and a quick read) more your thing?
Do you want to see more how to's? Videos? Q + A's? I'm open to all of this!!!
Please leave me a comment below, email me (info@winterdaisy.com) if you'd rather let me know privately or send me a DM on Instagram. Your help is so, SO much appreciated to help guide the direction of the blog and ensure we are creating content that you want to come back for!!!
A big thank you to all who take the time to answer any of these questions with your thoughts,
HELLO!
WINTER DAISY was created when Melissa Barling was laying on the couch while pregnant with twins. She dreamed of a beautiful baby room but couldn't get up and make it happen. The babies were born and in those mid night wakes and early morning feeds, she decided to leave her corporate job to start a design studio + blog. Welcome to WINTER DAISY.
